Home / About the Project
Why six island communities came together — and what we set out to build.
The S.O.S project was born from a deep recognition of the challenges that remote islands encounter today. These territories often experience cultural erosion, the departure of young people seeking opportunities elsewhere, and growing exposure to climate change. Teachers in these regions indicated that they lacked structured tools and training for addressing cultural and environmental topics in their classrooms, and students expressed a desire to feel more connected to their identity and community.
S.O.S directly responds to these concerns by creating opportunities for learning, dialogue, exploration, and collaboration among islanders. The project integrates cultural preservation, environmental education, youth empowerment, and innovative pedagogy into one coherent initiative. By doing so, it not only strengthens local communities but also highlights the resilience, diversity, and richness that define island life across Europe and beyond.
The reality islanders face
Traditions and identity at risk of fading
Young people leaving for opportunities elsewhere
Growing environmental vulnerability
Teachers lack tools for these topics
What we’re working toward
The main objective of the S.O.S project is to safeguard the cultural and environmental heritage of island communities while empowering students and teachers to become active protectors of their environment and traditions.
The project aims to document cultural practices, stories, and traditions; increase environmental literacy in schools; enhance the confidence and motivation of youth to remain engaged in their communities; and provide teachers with modern, relevant, and adaptable educational tools. Another core objective is to build resilience by teaching strategies for climate adaptation and preparing students to understand and respond to environmental risks.
To support these goals, the project produces a documentary film, develops a complete sustainability curriculum, organizes outdoor camps, and creates a strong international school network that ensures long-lasting collaboration among island territories.
