Module 5 — Portugal

Thematic Pillar: Cultural Heritage / Climate Change

This module invites primary school students (ages 8–10) to discover Madeira’s living heritage — from the ancient Laurissilva forest, to the centuries-old levada water channels, to the terraced fields that still feed the island today. Across three lessons, students connect nature, culture, and sustainability through Madeira’s most iconic landscapes.

  • The Laurissilva Forest — UNESCO-listed biodiversity and cultural heritage
  • Levadas — Madeira’s historic water channels and the levadeiros who maintain them
  • Traditional agriculture — poios, bananas, vineyards, and sustainable farming
